Weekly Roundup - The Halloween Edition

By Violet Wisdom

-Most trace Halloween origins to the Celtic (Druid) celebration of Samhain (sow-win) which likely occurred around 2,000 years ago. The original period was from October 31 to November 1.

-It was believed that all barriers between our world and the spirit world were broken during this celebratory harvest time. To protect themselves from nefarious spirits, many Celts wore costumes which was the beginning of our costume tradition.

-The Celts carved turnips for use as lanterns. The pumpkin is a truly American version of this tradition.

-46% of Americans believe in ghosts

-Increases in ghost investigations during 2020/2021 is attributed to people being home more than they ever were due to the pandemic and able to notice more sights and sounds.
