Phytoplankton produced gasses have been found in the atmosphere of a planet over a hundred light years from Earth. Discovered by the James Web Telescope, this is the second time these gasses have been detected in association with the planet known as K2-18B.

Both dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl sulfide are associated with marine life here on Earth. Along with other evidence, scientists believe the planet likely has a large ocean and some form of extraterrestrial life. The first finding of these chemicals occurred in 2023 with a 68% level of confidence. The more recent finding came in at a confidence level of 99.7%. While that is incredibly high, it has to be essentially 100% before considered fact. Some scientists have theorized that although these gasses are only created by marine life on Earth, they could be created in a way unknown to us on another planet. This theory can be applied to both help and discredit the idea that they are proof of life.
K2-18B is an exoplanet in the goldilocks zone or habitable zone, a region with excellent conditions for liquid water and of course living beings.
There are two knowns:
1- Gases have been found multiple times that come from water-dwelling life
2- This particular planet looks to have a large amount of water, with at least one massive ocean
Is K2-18B the home to some of our aquatic ET visitors? Could there be a connection to Sirius B, which is 8.6 light years from Earth? Maybe a stopping off point on the way here. I have to wonder, if this much of James Web Telescope information is being released to the public, how much more is not?
