Mary Ann Zabel — Bigfoot Researcher & Investigator

Mary Ann Zabel’s fascination with cryptids began at an early age. Growing up in a small town, she spent countless hours at the local library reading every book she could find on the subject. When she wasn’t in school, she explored the woods surrounding her grandmother’s home—a place where she often had the unsettling feeling that she was being watched. Strange occurrences happened there as well, though it wasn’t until adulthood that Mary Ann began connecting those experiences with her lifelong interest in the unknown.

As an adult, Mary Ann continued exploring the subject through books, television programs, and research. Then she learned about an actual Bigfoot expedition taking place in Southern Missouri. She went home and told her husband, Robert, “This is something we’re going to do.” Robert was skeptical.

That changed on Mary Ann’s very first BFRO expedition, when she experienced a Class A Bigfoot sighting. The encounter became a defining moment and set the course for the rest of her life.

Mary Ann went on to become an investigator with the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO), eventually leading expeditions throughout Missouri. Her passion for research and bringing people together led her to recognize another need: Missouri had no major Bigfoot conferences or festivals. She decided to change that and founded the Ozark Mountain Bigfoot Conference, which has grown into a successful and expanding event for researchers, investigators, and Bigfoot enthusiasts.

Today, Mary Ann’s investigations and expeditions take her throughout Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Illinois. Her expeditions are focused on investigating reports, exploring the evidence, and giving participants an opportunity to experience the field for themselves.

Even her husband Robert, once the skeptic, has become more of a believer through the experiences surrounding Mary Ann’s investigations. Mary Ann has developed a reputation among those who join her in the field as someone who seems to attract Bigfoot activity—and many participants on her expeditions have reported unusual and unexplained experiences of their own.

​

Mary Ann is emerging as one of the most notable researchers and investigators in the Bigfoot community. Through Ozark Mountain Bigfoot, she continues to investigate, educate, and bring people together in the search for answers to one of the greatest mysteries of the wilderness.
